Big 5 Equations

Before Class Preparation:

  • Video: Calculating Average Speed
  • Read this post on motion diagrams
  • Be prepare to work on paper outside (bring pencil and binder, dress for the weather, unless it rains)

In Class Activity:

  • Deriving the Big 5 equations

  • BYOD for Google Forms quiz
  • Pencil & Calculator for paper part of quiz

In Class Work:

40 minute quiz: Kinematics Graphs

  • Part 1: 20 Multiple Choice on Google Form (1 attempt only)
    • Match the graphs with the descriptions
      • at rest?
      • + / – constant velocity?
      • + / – constant acceleration?
      • Speeding up? Slowing down?
    • Choose the best descriptor and match the labeled sections
      • at rest?
      • + / – constant velocity?
      • + / – constant acceleration?
  • Part 2: Draw d-t/v-t/a-t graphs
    • Convert between graphs
    • Sketch d-t & a-t graph from a given v-t graph
    • Identify areas of graphs where object is speeding up or slowing down
  • This slide will be provided during the quiz

Can you:

  • Identify a motion based on a d-t or v-t graph
  • Describe the changing motions of the different segments in a d-t or v-t graph
  • Convert different graphs of motion (given one of d-t or v-t graph, draw the proper corresponding d-t/v-t/a-t graphs with sample calculations)
  • Draw d-t/v-t/a-t graphs of different types of motion with constant acceleration
    • Speeding up/Slowing down/Constant velocity in the positive or negative directions.

After quiz:
