Scientific Notation

Before class preparation

  • Bring a Calculator
  • Print scientific notation handout if you can
  • Why do we use scientific notation?
  • There are three rules on determining how many significant figures are in a number:
    • Non-zero digits are always significant.
    • Any zeros between two significant digits are significant.
    • A final zero or trailing zeros in the DECIMAL PORTION ONLY are significant.

In class activity

  • Video: Scientific Notation
  • PowerPoint: Scientific Notation (with whiteboards)
  • Scientific Notation Worksheet:
    • State scientific notation with the correct number of significant digits

After class work

  • Finish worksheet
  • Work on your space research project

Quiz – Stop Motion Project

Before Class Preparation:

  • Finish
    • Data table and d-t/v-t graphs for assigned velocity and acceleration
    • Stop Motion Video Project

In Class Work:

  • 20 minutes written quiz about data graphs
  • PSA students may write the reflections during this time

Can you:

  • Estimate values from d-t and v-t graphs
  • Determine the motion of objects from d-t and v-t graphs
  • Use an appropriate equation to calculate quantities from the d-t and v-t graphs
  • Explain the shape and intersections of the two different lines on both graphs

After quiz:
